About the project
The Interdepartmental Center of Bioclimatology (CIBIC) of the University of Florence, in cooperation with the Institute of Biometeorology (CNR) and the Consortium of the Tuscany Region LaMMa (Laboratory of Monitoring and Environmental Modelling), is involved since 2005 in MeteoSalute Project; funded by the Health Service of the Tuscany Region. The aim of the project is to analyze the relationships between weather conditions and population health. The results will inform the citizen and health area about the potential hardship and risk for old persons with physical impairments or specific diseases. The aims of the project are :
- Inform the population about the potential risk conditions and
discomfort, but also of well-being, due to environmental and climatic
factors;
- Develop a prevention system that alerts the entire population
and in particular the risk groups (certain types of workers, the
elderly, children, patients with acute or chronic disease) about the
incidence of certain diseases due to actually and forecast weather
conditions;
- Rationalize health care and hospitalization (distribution of work, availability of beds, work shift for staff, procurement of materials, etc..) informing general practitioners, emergency medical care, managers hospital, etc.. regarding the presence of adverse weather and environmental conditions that can cause a spike in hospitalizations for specific diseases or an increase in mortality rates.
